(Ogadentoday Press)-Addis Ababa - Four people, including one police officer, were killed in Ethiopia on Sunday as protesters attacked a police station where Muslim demonstrators were being held, an official said on Tuesday."One police officer was killed while two police officers sustained injuries, and three members of the [protester's] group were killed during the violence," government spokesperson Shimeles Kemal told AFP.The attack occurred on Sunday in Gerba in the Amhara region, after demonstrators gathered to protest what they call undemocratic elections of the Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs, Ethiopia's highest Muslim representative body.Shimeles said the group attacked the police station with firearms and machetes after the arrest and tried to "forcefully release their members".Several people were arrested after the deaths, and police are searching for several people who escaped after the violence, but Shimeles said calm had returned to the city.

At The Village Restaurant, a popular open-air hangout for Mogadishu's returning diaspora community, a charcoal-powered Italian espresso machine brews Somalia's best cappuccino.Wi-fi internet beams throughout the cafe, as patrons check email, download music videos, and keep tabs on Somalia's latest news.As Mogadishu shifts from two decades of civil war to a quivering democracy, opportunities for business - from hotels to off-grid espresso makers to cafes like the Village - are flourishing. And so too are the opportunities for bringing them online.Perched between the tattered ruins of a flattened landscape, the glow of wireless receiver antennas has gradually replaced the orange glow of stray bullets, bringing a new era of global connectivity and freedom of information to the city's estimated one million residents.

The second round of talks between the Ethiopian government and the rebel ONLF (Ogaden National Liberation Front), facilitated by Kenya, hit a snag early this week, apparently over a vexed issue — the legitimacy or otherwise of the Ethiopian federal Constitution and whether it should form the basis of the discussions on substantive issues. The ONLF, which does not recognise the document, issued an angry statement on Thursday, accusing the Ethiopian government of seeking to scuttle the talks by setting new preconditions, contrary to previous agreement.Clearly, this is a potentially explosive issue that could ruin any prospect for progress. It is unfortunate that it has been allowed to overshadow what has otherwise been a promising start to the crucial talks aimed at ending one of the Horn’s longest running conflicts.

The Horn of Africa Vote in Virginia and Democratic Presidential Coattails.
Over 50,000 Virginians from the Horn of Africa (HoA) will vote in the 2012 election. During the last Presidential election, nearly all the votes went for President Obama in Northern Virginia and gave the President a convincing victory in the State of Virginia. The momentum President Obama had and the margins he led by was reasonable predictor that the President will do well and he did. The 2012 election polls in the other hand are very close to determine with Governor Romney edging one point ahead of the President with 3-4% 0f the voters undecided. But how will this influence Virginia’s congressional contests?
The African Union force in Somalia has said it hopes to vacate its base at the national stadium in Mogadishu in time for a football tournament in December.Earlier this week, the Somali Football Federation (SFF) said it wanted the venue to be used again for sports.Mogadishu Stadium was occupied by militia when the civil war began in 1991 and has been a base for various armed groups ever since. An AU spokesman told the BBC the move was a testament to improving security. The AU force and Somali government army drove the al-Qaeda-aligned al-Shabab group from the capital in August 2011. Correspondents say although there are still occasional attacks since the militants withdrew, people have been reconstructing shattered buildings across the battle-scarred city. There has also been progress on the political front with the election by MPs of a new president last month.AU force spokesman Col Ali Hamud told the BBC Somali service that the request from the SFF was a normal development.
